Williams: Police Should Protect and Serve Students, Not Discipline Them

RISE for Youth, a nonpartisan coalition, is promoting alternatives to incarceration, long-term suspensions and expulsions. “When you suspend a kid, you have them out of sight and out of mind, but they come back,” said Jeree Thomas, an attorney for the JustChildren Program of the Legal Aid and Justice Center, part of the RISE campaign. The coalition also wants memorandums of understandings between school districts and police specifying what student resource officers can and cannot do.
