Help Stop Youth Prisons in Virginia

Our state representatives recently heard a proposal from the Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) asking for authorization to construct a 60-bed youth prison in the Hampton Roads region and the allocation of funds for the design and future construction of a 96-bed facility on the 100-year-old Bon Air prison campus.

Take three steps to tell Virginia lawmakers you oppose youth prisons before it’s too late.

  1. Find your lawmakers phone number
  2. Urge them to keep funds for new youth prisons out of the upcoming budget. Suggested phone script below
  3. Share this link with your network to support Virginia’s children

Hello,

My name is __first and last___, and I live in [City/Town]. I’m calling regarding the Department of Juvenile Justice’s proposal to take us backward by building two new youth prisons.

Virginia’s juvenile justice system is transforming, but this proposal to construct more ineffective youth prisons threatens to undo the progress we’ve made so far. It’s clear that Virginians oppose youth prisons. Beaumont youth prison has closed, and community members in Chesapeake rejected plans for a new youth prison last year. It’s clear that new prisons are an irresponsible waste of taxpayer dollars, especially when we know they don’t work.

I urge Delegate/Senator __last name__to keep funds for new youth prisons out of the upcoming budget and visit RISEforYouth.org to learn more about why youth prisons don’t work.
